Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt

By Deborah Hopkinson, il. by James Ransome

One of my favorite children’s picture books is Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt. Clara, a very young slave girl was separated from her family and sold to another plantation to work in the fields. She learned to sew and used her talent to create a quilt that helped many slaves escape to freedom.

I feel a connection to Clara with my vision for Bible quilts for children’s beds. Just as Clara’s quilt pointed the way to freedom from slavery, Bible quilts can point the way to spiritual freedom found only in the Scriptures. My heart’s desire is that many will catch this vision for reaching young children and their parents for Jesus with the daily reminder of Bible stories when Children go to bed and when they wake up in the mornings.

I hope to find more ways to make Bible quilts available in the weeks and months ahead. Meanwhile there is a second Bible quilt coloring book nearly ready to publish under the title The First Christmas. These pictures could also be used to make a Christmas tree skirt.

Found: Art Quilting 101 course – Wendy Butler Burns

I discovered the perfect quilting course for me as I explore making Bible quilts, especially for the quilts that become illustrations for my upcoming Bible storybooks. Perhaps some of my reader/followers will be interested in signing up as well. Bible Quilt: The Creation

Creation QuiltMy Creation quilt is so nearly finished that I’m already showing it off as I do my book signings for my Bible storybook, The Creation. This picture was taken in Georgetown SC on Saturday, October 15, 2011.

See more about my Bible storybook The Creation at http://honeycombadventures.com/books/.

Next I plan to quilt the Christmas story both in applique and as a Christmas tree skirt with crayon-colored quilt blocks applied to the outer edge. I hope to have the coloring pages up for download before November 15, 2011.

The Creation: A Bible Quilt Coloring Book

The first coloring book is now available for download. It is illustrated by Nancy Gordon with lively and exciting pictures children will enjoy coloring.

Note: The intention in creating this coloring book was to market it as a download. The paper copies are more costly because they are only available as print on demand books.

Update: The links I had for getting these coloring pages no longer work. I plan to correct this as I deal with several issues on this website that went down some time ago and stayed down. Updates are under construction. 12/5/25
